serenades | brooksville, me
This program explores the serenade through a broad lens, across genres, eras, and styles in a changing world. At its heart is Josef Suk’s Serenade for Strings. We juxtapose this Romantic classic with Carlos Simon’s Between Worlds, a meditative work inspired by visual artist Bill Traylor, whose life and work spanned the end of slavery through the beginning of the Civil Rights movement. In our arrangement, different string parts “serenade” one another antiphonally across the ensemble. Ravel’s Trois Chansons, written at the outbreak of World War I, reflects on loss of life, innocence, and continuity in a changing world. Our arrangement of Laurie Anderson’s O Superman, fused with the third movement of Bach’s A Minor Violin Sonata, explores human relationships with machines and with one another. The program concludes with modern-day “moonlit serenades” by Glen Miller. Serenades is a musical call for a new and brighter world.

screen door festival opening concert | camden, me
A grand opening concert featuring many of the performers appearing throughout the week including the Viano and Balourdet Quartets, oboist James Austin Smith, flutist Catherine Gregory, violinist Simone Porter, violist, Celia Hatton, percussionist Brian Shankar Adler, cellist Arlen Hlusko, pianists David Kaplan and Janice Carissa, Latin-jazz vocalist Magos Herrera with guitarist Vinicius Gomes as well as our esteemed resident ensemble, Palaver Strings.
This vibrant and welcoming launch of Screen Door 2026 offers a first glimpse into the range of artists who will define the week. Over the next 5 days, music becomes the place where we meet, and where, a sense of home takes shape.
screen door festival | mozart in the morning | camden, me
James Austin Smith, a professor at Stony Brook University and former Fulbright scholar, will offer opening thoughts each day to bridge the evolving themes of the week. In Part 2 of our series, Palaver Strings brings its signature sense of connection and collective commitment to Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante, a work that resists easy categorization. Neither concerto nor symphony, it unfolds as a dialogue—between soloists and ensemble, between intimacy and scale, and between individual voice and collective sound.
In this edition of the series, members of the ensemble speak from the inside out—sharing the moments, instincts, and questions that shape their relationship with Mozart as artists today, inviting us into new ways of hearing his music.
screen door festival | serenades | camden, me
The much-loved, artist-led collective, Palaver Strings are known for their imaginative programming, collaborative spirit, and performances that blur the line between classical tradition and contemporary expression.
Anchored by the glowing lyricism of Josef Suk, this café concert reimagines the serenade as music meant to be shared—across time, across traditions, and among friends. Music by Carlos Simon and Ravel sits alongside a striking encounter between Laurie Anderson and Bach, creating a path that moves easily between reflection, rhythm, and moments of unexpected connection.
The familiar ease of Moonlight Serenade brings the concert to a close. Join us for an evening of serenades drifting across Hammer Hall at dusk, and the cozy warmth of songs that bring the heart home.
screen door festival season finale | camden, me
The culmination of a week of music-making, conversation, and shared experience, our Season Finale brings together the extraordinary artists who have defined our Screen Door Festival 2026. This joyful program features the celebrated South African jazz vocalist Vuyo Sotashe, joined by pianist and composer Chris Pattishall and Palaver Strings, alongside other festival artists in a series of unexpected collaborations and fresh encounters.
As we hear the festival’s final notes together, we hope the music settles into something more than performance—a sense of home and belonging, formed through the simple act of listening together.
Program to be announced at a later date.

chamber series - outlook | nobleboro, me
This program explores multiple outlooks on life and chamber music. Described as a “fervent, celebratory investigation into joy itself,” Paul Wiancko’s Lift explodes with adventurous textures that span the full sonic range of the string quartet. The program continues with two short contemplative pieces by Olafur Arnalds, and concludes with Schubert’s epic “Death and the Maiden,” a passionate dance with death that was only published after Schubert’s own death in 1828.

chamber series | night sky and the number pi - featuring michele kennedy | newburyport, ma
This concert takes the audience on a journey through a rich tapestry of intense emotional landscapes: relentless determination, the jubilant celebration of true love, the sorrow of forbidden passion, and the searing frustration of being misunderstood. These deeply evocative works are paired with pieces that explore quieter, more reflective themes—visiting a coffee shop, contemplating the intricate structure of an orange, gazing at the night sky, and pondering the endless mystery of the number pi. This deliberate contrast offers the audience both a musical reprieve and a gentle reminder that our emotional experience does not always need to be dominated by extremes. In embracing the mundane with the same reverence as the monumental, these composers invite us to find meaning and vitality in the everyday. Palaver will be joined by acclaimed soprano Michele Kennedy.
